Interacting with other HSPs can be one of the best ways to explore the ins and outs of living as a Highly Sensitive Person. After all, few people will have more insight into the ups and downs of living as an HSP than another HSP who has already been learning about the trait for some time.
The Internet affords HSPs the opportunity to make contact with each other through a variety of listservs, mailing lists, forums and other "Virtual Communities." The relative anonymity of the web, combined with the welcoming and empathic nature of HSPs, can make online group participation a very rewarding, yet "low stimulation" process for HSPs wanting to learn more about their trait. Whereas there are 100s of HSP cybergroups out there, I will limit this listing to the longest lived:
The "HSP Book" group on the YahooGroups network is one of the oldest HSP discussion groups on the web, started in 1996 by a handful of HSPs who wanted to read and discuss Elaine Aron's first book. Today, the group has over 1000 members, with discussions covering many different aspects of HSP life.
The "Highly Sensitive Person" community is the world's largest online community for HSPs. Started in 1997 as a free service attached to HSP coach and counselor Thomas Eldridge's web site, it has grown into a "free standing" interactive message board community with almost 3000 members.
The "HSC Book" group on the Yahoo Groups network was started as a discussion group for readers of Eaine Aron's "The Highly Sensitive Child," but has grown into a general discussion group for parents of Highly Sensitive Children.
The "HSP Work" group is also a part of the YahooGroups network. The group originated as a place to discuss Barrie Jaeger's book "Making Work Work for the Highly Sensitive Person" but has evolved into a general discussion forum of issues facing HSPs in the world of work. |
